Alan Coxon cookbook shortlisted for award

Recently, The Artisan Food Trail helped Alan Coxon produce his self-published food and travel cookbook, ‘Foods and influences of the Punjab and Amritsar, Goa and Bombay’. We are now delighted to announce that it has been shortlisted as one of the British entries in the food and travel category of the World Gourmand Awards.

Design and layout of the publication, was provided by Graham and Lisa Childs from the Artisan Food Trail and Dawn Mimnagh from Dotting and Crossing, a professional copywriting, editing, proofreading and PR practice, for Alan’s account of his travels.

The book is part two of a five-series travelogue entitled Birmingham to Bombay. Having beaten off stiff competition it has won the first round of a global competition.

The publication was the shortlisted British entry in the food and travel category of the World Gourmand Awards and is now a finalist for this prestigious award alongside other titles from around the world.

For this project, Alan Coxon travelled to various regions of India with food and travel photographer, Moe Kafer. Each book sets out to give an account of their travels to a specific Indian region, supported by stunning photographs of their visit and Alan’s interpretation of recipes from the area.

On learning of the book’s success, Alan Coxon said:
“I am delighted to have been successful in the first stage of the World Gourmand Awards. We decided to self publish as a series of mini books due to financial constraints and it is fantastic to see the hard work of Moe, Graham, Lisa and Dawn pay off in this way.”

He continued:
“India is such a vast place, with stark contrasts from north to south. I felt that covering the entirety of India in one large cookbook would not do the country, its food or its people the justice they deserved.”

Along with Alan’s recipes and musings on his travels, the book contains recipes from Indian guest chefs that won’t be found in traditional Indian cookbooks or on the menu at most restaurants.

The first two parts of Birmingham to Bombay are now available from www.booksbyalancoxon.com

AFT member Yare Valley Oils shortlisted for Producer Of The Year award

Norfolk producer Yare Valley Oils has been shortlisted in the East of England Co-op's Producer Of The Year awards and now it depends on your votes on whether they scoop the title for 2014.

The East of England Co-op says:

"We're passionate about local food, and we want to recognise the very best local producers on our Sourced Locally range."

There are six shortlisted producers
and as a little incentive the East of England Co-op will be entering the voters into a prize drawer to win £100 of shopping vouchers.

Yare Valley Oils, run by three family members, began trading in 2010 and first started selling to East of England Co-op stores in 2011.
The oil, which is grown and pressed on the farm, is rich in omega 3 and enjoys a nutty flavour that is ideal for frying, roasting, sauces, baking, marinades and salads.
Read more over on the Co-op's website to find out why Yare Valley Oils has been shortlisted.

Here at The Artisan Food Trail we would be very grateful for your support for one of our members, so please vote for Yare Valley Oils.

BBC Food & Farming Awards returns for 2014

***
Just before Christmas The Artisan Food Trail was contacted by the BBC asking us to become involved in publicising their BBC Food & Farming Awards.
Promoting the best of British food and supporting the producers making that food is very important to us and is at the very heart of what we do, so we feel flattered that the BBC considered The Artisan Food Trail in playing a part.

The BBC Food & Farming Awards took a break last year, but in 2012 some AFT members were nominated (including ourselves!) and then some even made it to the shortlist.
As soon as the nominations process opens on 5th January, we would really appreciate your support in putting forward those food producers you admire.

Over the years the awards have recognised people like school dinner lady Jeanette Orrey, who went on to help thousands of school cooks across the UK, 2012’s Farmer of the year Guy Watson, for his success with Riverford’s veg box scheme and national retailers like Sainsbury’s for its work supporting small scale producers.

Winning an award can make a huge difference to an individual or a business. Last year’s winner in the Best Food Market category was pHd student Emily Boothroyd who set up a farmers’ market inside Sutton Bonington University campus, she explained that “winning an award was life changing! It gave me the confidence to change my career path entirely, markets are now my life”.

Two restaurant chefs, a prison cook and a celebrated food blogger are leading a BBC mission to find the very best in British food and farming.

Raymond Blanc and Richard Corrigan are being joined by Al Crisci, the founder of the Clink restaurant in Highdown prison and blogger Jack Monroe, on the 2014 judging team of the BBC Food & Farming Awards.

Valentine Warner, food writer, cook and judge says:
“The BBC Food & Farming Awards belong to everyone because it’s a celebration of the most delicious and important things in our lives. It’s a real chance for the public to share the food stories that really matter to them”.

Chef, Richard Corrigan says:
“We’re always amazed by the stories that come in to us as judges, and we never know where in the UK the nominations will take us… from visits to cheese-makers and dinner ladies to farm shop owners and national retailers… but we care about each and every one, the stories are inspiring”.

People can send nominations (via www.bbc.co.uk/foodawards) in all ten categories; individuals and businesses can also nominate their own work.

The categories are as follows:
Best Food Producer
From bread to butter, cheese to chocolate - tell us about the people and businesses using quality ingredients, lots of skill and dedication to create an excellent, fairly priced, finished product.

Best Drinks Producer
Brewers, distillers, wine-makers, juice producers - tell us about the people using carefully sourced ingredients and skill to produce an outstanding drink.

Best Food Market
We're looking for a regular market that brings together a wide range of great producers and serves a local community by providing fresh, quality, affordable food.

Best Street Food or Takeaway
From street food pop-ups to high street institutions, celebrate the people taking the takeaway and street food to a whole new level.

Best Initiative in British Food
A specific idea or initiative that’s making a positive difference to how and what Britain eats, and is showing the industry the way forward.

Outstanding Farmer of the Year
A farmer, young or old, male or female, livestock or arable who has made an outstanding contribution to farming with cutting edge thinking and creative ideas.

The Radio 4 'You and Yours' Best Food Retailer
Tell us about local shops that enrich lives, high streets and communities by selling delicious, great quality, affordable food.

BBC Cook of the Year
Do you know someone who is preparing tasty, healthy meals on a budget in a hospital, school, care-home or other workplace and deserves to be celebrated?

Derek Cooper Lifetime Achievement Award
Named after The Food Programme's first presenter, this award is for the individual or organisation whose life’s work has brought about real change in our relationship with food.

Food Personality of the Year 2014
Which personality in the last year has inspired you to think differently about food? A writer, broadcaster, blogger, television chef …

Your nominations are important to us

The Artisan Food Trail would like to ask you to consider the people/businesses on the food trail and include one or some of them in your nominations.
Each and every one has such pride and passion for what they do. They make amazing food, share their knowledge and are seriously making a difference to the face of British food.

Maybe you think The Artisan Food Trail is also a worthy contender?
We’ll leave that to you.

The BBC Food & Farming Awards are open for nominations from Sunday 5th January 2014 and close on Monday 27th January 2014.

For further information on the awards and to make your nomination
please visit
www.bbc.co.uk/foodawards

Plus, keep an eye out for the Food Programme's Twitter feed, @bbcfoodprog using the hashtag #bbcfoodawards for all the latest updates.

The best ideas that come through the judging process will be featured on BBC Radio 4’s The Food Programme and a special edition of the BBC Food & Farming Awards, also on Radio 4.

Presenter of the Food Progamme and one of the founders of the Awards in 2000, Sheila Dillon encourages you to get online to nominate ‘‘They’re your awards set up to highlight the achievements of people, mostly working under the media radar, who add to the quality of all our lives.’’

The eventual winners will be announced at the annual BBC Food & Farming Awards ceremony, to be held at the St Georges concert Hall, Bristol on Thursday 1st May. Shortly after, BBC Radio 4 will broadcast a programme featuring the winners and judges.

The Artisan Food Trail is a finalist in the Hertfordshire Green Awards

Perhaps we should have told you about this a little earlier but as our Artisan Food Trail members always come first, we've been busy promoting them and completely forgot about ourselves!

Last Wednesday we attended the Hertfordshire Green Awards as we were selected as finalists in ‘The Green Communications Award’.

The awards are organised by Archant Herts & Cambs, the publishers of several newspapers in our county and beyond. This year was the third time the Green Awards were held. It recognises businesses that are already actively involved in championing green issues and at the same time making their businesses and in turn their local communities a greener place to live.

The Green Communications Award recognises the efforts that companies have introduced to communicate in a 'greener' format. This could include the transmission of any marketing messages, the implementation of a greater use of digital media, an increase in employee engagement or an increase in community engagement.

One of the awards sponsors is Environmental Population, an initiative which provides environmental information to people whether they want to improve their home or their business.
As a membership based organisation they offer some great options for their members to promote what they do, develop new business contacts and sales and ultimately help the business community become fully sustainable.
The Artisan Food Trail is a member of Environmental Population (you may have noticed the logo on our website and blog) as we are always looking for ways to improve how we run our business from an environmental aspect and also we want to be able to pass on the benefits to our members too.

It’s not always about winning,

but about taking part and meeting people…

We weren't chosen as winners of our category, but we still feel very honoured to be finalists and congratulations to The Eco Schools Network who took the top prize.

There is always an upside to events like this though as it provides the perfect opportunity to meet new people and share what we do with them. Let's face it there aren't many people who don't have an interest in food.

Prior to the awards ceremony an exhibition was put on for businesses to showcase their products and services – all green, of course. We spoke to companies offering electric and hybrid cars, solar panels, waste management/ compliance, environmental consultants and digital marketing services. You may well ask what has that got to do with food? Well, we are developing many more angles to The Artisan Food Trail, all of which will be put in place to help our members with their businesses.

Valuable connections

The awards dinner offered a particularly favourable moment as we not only shared our table with the mayor and mayoress of Stevenage but also the managing director of Lussmanns.
Andrei Lussmann runs two restaurants in Hertfordshire, in St Albans and Hertford where ethical practice, sustainability and the sourcing of food from regional artisan producers is key. Because of its values, Lussmanns scooped the ‘Winner’ status in ‘Best Hotel or Hospitality Environmental Programme’.

It was Andrei that approached us as he is very interested in how we could work together. This a very exciting proposition and plans will be made for us to meet again soon and discuss things further.

Being a finalist is one thing, but to leave feeling very excited because of a chance meeting is something else altogether as the spirit is lifted by the prospect of widening horizons in the future.

BBC Food & Farming Awards 2012

Photo: © childsdesign
***
Nominations are now open for the BBC Food & Farming Awards 2012. For the thirteenth year running the awards will be celebrating the lives of the unsung heroes of the food world.

The annual search begins again to seek out the best in British food.
Not only does the food have to taste good but it needs to be the food that’s changing the country and us for the better, even though we’re right in the middle of the recession.
The awards will be looking for food that’s reviving towns, creating fulfilling jobs, boosting the economy, involving people in the food system, preserving what’s local and helping to teach our children the pleasures and value of food – all of the things that The Artisan Food Trail supports.

Farmers, cooks, market traders, food and drink producers and retailers are all in the running – but people who help us change the way we think about food are also being considered, so writers, campaigners, bloggers and broadcasters are also celebrated by the awards.

Award-winning chef Angela Hartnett launched this year's BBC Food & Farming Awards in a special edition of BBC Radio 4’s The Food Programme (click here to listen) on Sunday 17th June. She made an appeal to the British public to celebrate food in their local areas by nominating the most deserving.

Angela says:

“The Awards this year are more important than ever. We’re in the thick of a recession and money is tight and it’s a tough time to be in business. After decades of decline and having among the world’s worst reputation for food, we now manage to produce some of the best you can find. But this progress is fragile and is now at risk of being lost if we don’t shout about what we have.
We need to celebrate the people making a difference in food and drink.”

Sheila Dillon, judge and presenter of The Food Programme on
BBC Radio 4, says:

“These Awards are like a barometer of British food; they’re a great guide to what’s happening across the UK.
Each year we receive more nominations and I can’t wait to see who we meet, and what we get to taste this year.”

There are nine categories as follows:
Best Food Market
Best Street Food or Takeaway
Best Food Producer
Best Drinks Producer
Best Local Food Retailer
Best Big Food Idea
BBC Farmer of the Year
Best 'Dinner Lady' / Public Caterer
The Derek Cooper Award

The panel of judges who will decide the shortlist and winners of the BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards 2012 based on your nominations:
Angela Hartnett

Theo Paphitis selects The Artisan Food Trail

Last night we decided to enter Theo Paphitis's Twitter competition called Small Business Sunday. Those of you who watch Dragons' Den will know Theo and his ability to spot a good business, so we were very excited when we found out that we'd been selected as one of the six winners by him.

Our tweet retweeted by Theo Paphitis
It's a very simple process and if you run a small business and are on Twitter, we strongly recommend you have a go.
The competition runs each Sunday evening from 5pm – 7.30pm. Just send a tweet to Theo Paphitis describing what your business does, include a link to your website and add the #sbs.
You can enter as many times as you like, so if you're not successful the first time, then try again the following week. It is very simple, but important that you can describe exactly what you do in a concise way that will attract the Dragon's attention. Imagine you are doing your pitch but you don't have much time to deliver it. It's what's known as an elevator pitch.

As soon as the time is up, Theo hand picks his favourites and retweets them. Theo has a lot of followers, the last time we looked it was well over 164,500, so imagine all the people that get to see his retweet. That's a vast amount of free advertising and publicity for you.

We experienced the full power of Twitter as congratulations flooded in like a joyful tidal wave. Throngs of new followers filled our inbox, which took us most of this morning to clear and we have had more inquiries from food producers wanting to join the food trail, plus the hits on our website increased.
Last night was proof that social media is an extremely powerful tool. One small action can generate a huge positive reaction.

Although we are basking in the glow of having been chosen by a very influential person, the best thing about it, is that all of our listed producers have been shown to so many more people.
It's amazing what that one tweet did and we hope that now we're reaching an even wider audience, it benefits our producers too.

We've won an award!: The Artisan Food Trail is 'Highly Commended' for Internet Marketing

Graham Childs (left) and Lisa Childs (centre)

Last night we achieved our first milestone and we're very excited about it too.
Although The Artisan Food Trail has only been around for just four months, we have been recognised by being awarded a 'Highly Commended' Internet Marketing Award for 2011. As the award title suggests, we were not only judged on our website, but for all of our marketing activity and promotion online – website, blog, email campaign, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and the numerous other places you'll find, see or know about us.

From what started as a passion for real food from real people and a humble food blog, we've amazed ourselves in what we've been able to achieve in those four months and we thank everyone that's supported us so far.
The food producers who are part of the trail form the symbiotic relationship that holds together, what is becoming a strong online community, helping us to help others.

We obviously intend to build The Artisan Food Trail further, so who knows what awards we may be winning in the future.
