Alan Coxon cookbook shortlisted for award

Recently, The Artisan Food Trail helped Alan Coxon produce his self-published food and travel cookbook, ‘Foods and influences of the Punjab and Amritsar, Goa and Bombay’. We are now delighted to announce that it has been shortlisted as one of the British entries in the food and travel category of the World Gourmand Awards.

Design and layout of the publication, was provided by Graham and Lisa Childs from the Artisan Food Trail and Dawn Mimnagh from Dotting and Crossing, a professional copywriting, editing, proofreading and PR practice, for Alan’s account of his travels.

The book is part two of a five-series travelogue entitled Birmingham to Bombay. Having beaten off stiff competition it has won the first round of a global competition.

The publication was the shortlisted British entry in the food and travel category of the World Gourmand Awards and is now a finalist for this prestigious award alongside other titles from around the world.

For this project, Alan Coxon travelled to various regions of India with food and travel photographer, Moe Kafer. Each book sets out to give an account of their travels to a specific Indian region, supported by stunning photographs of their visit and Alan’s interpretation of recipes from the area.

On learning of the book’s success, Alan Coxon said:
“I am delighted to have been successful in the first stage of the World Gourmand Awards. We decided to self publish as a series of mini books due to financial constraints and it is fantastic to see the hard work of Moe, Graham, Lisa and Dawn pay off in this way.”

He continued:
“India is such a vast place, with stark contrasts from north to south. I felt that covering the entirety of India in one large cookbook would not do the country, its food or its people the justice they deserved.”

Along with Alan’s recipes and musings on his travels, the book contains recipes from Indian guest chefs that won’t be found in traditional Indian cookbooks or on the menu at most restaurants.

The first two parts of Birmingham to Bombay are now available from www.booksbyalancoxon.com

Aloo Mutton Shakkarwala (Caramelised Lamb Curry)

Photo: © childsdesign

***
Having worked on Alan Coxon’s new book From Birmingham To Bombay: Food and Influences of the Punjab and Amritsar, and reading through all the recipes, we just had to have a go at making some. They all sound absolutely delicious so it was difficult on deciding what to make first, but this one caught our eye.
Being slightly non-conformist we chose to used goat meat instead of lamb which delivered perfect results. If you’re not a lover of lamb, and we do know a few, goat is a good alternative – the texture is similar but it is not as fatty and does not have that, well, lamby taste.

If the word ‘caramelised’ conjures up images of toffee sauce, do not be put off. The caramelisation of the sugar is needed to create the rich colour and lends only a delicate delicious sweetness.
We recommend that you make up Alan’s Kashmiri-Style Garam Masala for this dish which can be found in the book but a good quality pre-made one would be fine.

We really loved this curry. It is rich in flavour with a wonderful combination of spice flavours which build into a gradual heat. Serve with rice and naan bread.

One artisan to another: Creating UsableART™

***
A slightly unusual collaboration has given birth, or perhaps a whole new lease of life to something as simple as a piece of packaging.
For those of you who’ve purchase any of Alan Coxon’s historic vinegars have no doubt admired the stylish bottles that they come in. It seems such a shame to throw them away when they look and feel so good on the table.

Alan Coxon was inspired to take this a little further knowing that his customers carried on enjoying the bottles putting them to other uses around the home.

When Alan brought out his vinegars he wanted a bottle that evoked the product within, so he set about designing the bottle with a solid feel, had curvaceousness in the hand and a practical application.

He has now teamed up the artist RaRa Jane to produce unique UsableART™ pieces.
The artworks found on the bottles are all one-off individual images, all hand-printed and painted by artist RaRa Jane, who also incorporates silver leaf to add a touch of elegance. RaRa Jane uses the latest techniques and every bottle undergoes a three-day handmade process.

The bottles are real conversational pieces in the home, adding colour and individual art to some everyday areas.
They are not only beautifully useful in the kitchen, but also look great in the bathroom filled with bubble bath, shampoo, in the window with a few elegant flowers or transforming the evening by adding a touch of romance with a candle.

The bottles are presented in silk-lined gift boxes and come with a certificate of authenticity signed by artist RaRa Jane and Alan Coxon offering a stunning unique gift. If you are looking for something more bespoke then your own specific images or art can be applied on to the bottle.

We think the UsableART™ bottle designs are truly stunning and would make fantastic presents.

Please visit the shop to order your UsableART™
You can also order bespoke designs from the shop too.

'From Birmingham to Bombay' first book published

You may remember a little while back we published a post about Alan Coxon’s forthcoming TV series From Birmingham to Bombay, which touched on a rumour of the accompanying books. Well, the first book has finally been published and is available as a downloadable e-book, and a Kindle book as well as a physical print-on-demand version.

It is a real pleasure to work with Alan Coxon and we’d like to thank him for giving us the opportunity to design and publish his book series and website.
The Artisan Food Trail offers a variety of services to its members either directly or through carefully selected partners. Design and working for publishing companies is something that we have been doing for nearly 30 years, so it seemed only natural to offer our experience to benefit AFT members.

Back to the book. Part one in a series of five books covers the Punjab and Amritsar region of India and takes the form of a 74 page, full colour culinary travelogue.
Including behind the scenes stories and delicious recipes from the northern regions of India, Alan visits the Golden Temple and sees how 40,000 chapattis are produced every day by volunteers. He goes behind the tandoori and looks at herbs and spices, such as cardamom, mustard and ginger which are used extensively throughout the region.

Recipes from the book include Paneer Tikka Kalimirch, Kandhari Barwaan Khumb, Green Fish Curry, Tandoori Murgh and Chooza Makhni.
If you enjoy the foods of India, curries and especially tandoori, then this is a book that won't disappoint.

Sanjeev Kapoor
The foreword is written by Sanjeev Kapoor which is a great endorsement and as he’s one of India's most respected celebrity chefs, it says a lot for Alan's knowledge and recipe authenticity.

One of the advantages of seeing the copy while working on the design is that we got to try out some of the recipes! The Tandoori Spice Blend on page 28 made for a particularly tasty chicken.

If you would like to buy the book, From Birmingham to Bombay Part One: Foods and Influences of the Punjab and Amritsar, it is available through www.booksbyalancoxon.com
The downloadable e-book and the Kindle book are both priced at £3.99 and the physical print-on-demand version is priced at £14.99.

Brand new website launches for Alan Coxon’s Historic Food Range

Buying Alan Coxon’s historic food range has become easier since the launch of a dedicated website foodbyalancoxon.com.

A few months ago, Alan Coxon got in touch with us at The Artisan Food Trail to ask whether we’d be able to create a website for him which would allow him to sell his products more effectively.

Visitors to our website will notice that we have various offerings to assist our members, one of those being website services. The Artisan Food Trail works with experts to ensure that it can achieve the best results according to budget and this is where Building Websites For Business comes in.

Consisting of three key people, one of whom is Graham Childs who is not only joint founder of The Artisan Food Trail but also a director and the design/creative member of the team. He is responsible for the look of the website, creating a strong brand identity. Steve Ramsey handles the technical side, making sure the website is set up to be found easily on the web and is Google friendly (it’s a lot more complicated than we make it sound!) Dawn Mimnagh is the copywriter. Her role is to create readable, grammatically correct text that is accurate as well as interesting and informative.

But enough about the behind the scenes stuff, the best part is that the foodbyalancoxon.com website is live, it’s looking good and ready to take orders. Each product is proudly displayed on the front page; Ale-Gar©®, Ancient Greek Vinaigre©®, Roman Vinaigre©® and Macadamia Nut Oil with a click-through to ‘buy now’ or you can go to the shop area.

For some culinary insight, Alan Coxon, shares some of his recipes, using the historic food range, in a special section which gives you plenty of ideas on how to use them. Overall, the look of the website is modern with a traditional twist, echoing the roots of inspiration behind Alan Coxon’s historic food range.

Alan Coxon introduces new Macadamia Nut Oil to his range

Photo: ©Alan Coxon

***
Alan Coxon has launched a brand new product within the UK in the form of one of the healthiest oils in the world.

Macadamia nut oil has so many wonderful properties including no cholesterol and high in vitamin E and omega 7, and equally as important, it tastes fantastic with a mild clean flavour of the nut itself.

Alan has added the cold pressed extra virgin Macadamia nut oil to his existing historic food range that includes the globally unique and multi award winning Mediaeval Old English Ale-Gar™, Roman Vinaigre™ and Ancient Greek Vinaigre™ because it marries so well with these products.

The nutty flavour, density and golden colour goes hand in hand to create a stunning dip for bread, salad dressing, or marinade.
In addition to the health and flavour benefits, the oil is perfect to cook with and one of the best for roasting, baking and frying, offering a smoke point of up to 210˚C.
