New look website for The Artisan Food Trail

The Artisan Food Trail originally launched in March 2011 and since then has grown considerably as new members have joined and the digital world has moved forward.

Wanting to offer a better user experience for website visitors as well our members and to make the website responsive keeping up with current technologies, we have given it a complete overhaul.

A cleaner page layout with large images along with functional information panels helps to better showcase each food and drink producer featured on
the site.
Comprehensive menus and content give detailed information on the services offered by The Artisan Food Trail and the recipe section, again, with bigger images, serves to inspire and inform.

We have also included an online application form for prospective members which will make things a lot simpler all round.

The website was designed and built by husband and wife team Graham and Lisa Childs, – both the founders of The Artisan Food Trail and owners of the design company, childsdesign.

We admit it has taken a long time to finally get the website completed and there are still some tweaks to be done and new content to be added.
Building a website from the ground up is a lengthy process (especially one as big as ours) and it's surprising how much more you learn when doing something like this.

We are still in the process of building the members' area and when fully functioning it will allow new members to pay for their subscriptions online and existing members can renew in the same way while getting access to exclusive content, amongst other things.

If you have already seen the new website you may have noticed that we have a shop coming soon. We're very excited about this as visitors will finally be able to buy artisan food and drink direct from our members.

Got a spare moment?

Meet us at the Farm Business Innovation Show

We’re looking forward to exhibiting at the Farm Business Innovation Show and we’re busy preparing everything we need for the two day event on 9th – 10th November at the NEC, Birmingham.

The Farm Business Innovation show is actually a combination of three shows (all in the one place) – Rural Entrepreneur Live, Country House Business Innovation and Holiday Park & Resort Innovation.

Under one roof, over two days this will be the only place in the UK a rural land or business owner can source information and advice on funding, grants, planning, new products, new services, new ideas, troubleshooting, business tips, marketing tools, networking, inspiring keynote sessions, like-minded professionals, potential partnerships and so much more. Visitors go into their next venture fully equipped!

The show is aimed at a variety of people primarily in the rural sector
looking to bring in more money, either from their land or property and much more besides.
The Artisan Food Trail sits nicely into this area which is the reason that the show organisers asked us to team up with them and become a partner.

Not only will there be over 300 suppliers exhibiting but also over 150 free seminars all with your business in mind. Our very own co-founder Graham Childs will be talking on the first day and we'll be posting more details at a later date.

Who should visit The Artisan Food Trail stand?

The Artisan Food Trail promotes and champions small and artisan food and drink producers throughout the United Kingdom. We create awareness of your brand and your produce.

Even if you don’t see exactly the thing that fits your description above, you can still come and talk to us. We’ve found out ourselves, that you never know who you’re going to meet at these types of events and often a conversation can lead to a positive outcome.

Alan Coxon cookbook shortlisted for award

Recently, The Artisan Food Trail helped Alan Coxon produce his self-published food and travel cookbook, ‘Foods and influences of the Punjab and Amritsar, Goa and Bombay’. We are now delighted to announce that it has been shortlisted as one of the British entries in the food and travel category of the World Gourmand Awards.

Design and layout of the publication, was provided by Graham and Lisa Childs from the Artisan Food Trail and Dawn Mimnagh from Dotting and Crossing, a professional copywriting, editing, proofreading and PR practice, for Alan’s account of his travels.

The book is part two of a five-series travelogue entitled Birmingham to Bombay. Having beaten off stiff competition it has won the first round of a global competition.

The publication was the shortlisted British entry in the food and travel category of the World Gourmand Awards and is now a finalist for this prestigious award alongside other titles from around the world.

For this project, Alan Coxon travelled to various regions of India with food and travel photographer, Moe Kafer. Each book sets out to give an account of their travels to a specific Indian region, supported by stunning photographs of their visit and Alan’s interpretation of recipes from the area.

On learning of the book’s success, Alan Coxon said:
“I am delighted to have been successful in the first stage of the World Gourmand Awards. We decided to self publish as a series of mini books due to financial constraints and it is fantastic to see the hard work of Moe, Graham, Lisa and Dawn pay off in this way.”

He continued:
“India is such a vast place, with stark contrasts from north to south. I felt that covering the entirety of India in one large cookbook would not do the country, its food or its people the justice they deserved.”

Along with Alan’s recipes and musings on his travels, the book contains recipes from Indian guest chefs that won’t be found in traditional Indian cookbooks or on the menu at most restaurants.

The first two parts of Birmingham to Bombay are now available from www.booksbyalancoxon.com

Nordic cultural exchange in food

***
If you love food and are looking to broaden your taste horizons towards northern latitudes, you absolutely must get down to The Icelandic Pantry at Borough Market now for the final two days of their residency, the last day being Saturday 10th October.

The Icelandic Pantry is a collection of 14 artisan producers from all over Iceland who have brought their wares to our own fair capital.
There are lots of opportunities to taste before you buy and really get to know the people that make the products.

Before we go any further we want to reassure you that The Artisan Food Trail is still very much focussed on British food and drink producers. This post is about one of our outings where we have an opportunity to meet new people, spread the word about what we do and hopefully pick up a few useful pointers on the way – a learning experience for all businesses involved.

You may or may not know that we are lovers of Iceland, having been to the country repeatedly since 2001. During that time we have seen the nation’s food culture change radically.
The Icelandic Pantry’s organiser and owner of Búrið in Reykjavík, Eirný Ósk Sigurðardóttir has been following The Artisan Food Trail for some time and we are very flattered to learn that she has found it an inspiration.
As a result, we were invited to the special drinks reception last night and can say that we had a most enjoyable time. It was really good to talk to Eirný and also Áslaug Guðjónsdóttir (project manager, food, fisheries and agriculture of Íslandsstofa – Promote Iceland) about what we do and why we do it. Not only that but also to find out about them too.
We got to speak to many of the producers who are so enthusiastic about what they do, which is always exciting for us.

We were so impressed with the produce on offer that we bought rather a lot! Oops! But we know it is worth every penny.

Food businesses invited to rise to the challenge

What could your small food business do with £5000 worth of business help?

For many small food businesses getting help they need to grow can be costly, so we at The Artisan Food Trail are supporting this through our very own design company, childsdesign. Our part of the prize offers both a big understanding of branding for your business and the marketing required online and offline for a small food business.

There is a chance to win up to £5000 worth of business advice for your small food business and The Food Business Challenge has been put together to help prepare one lucky business for the next step. All you have to do to stand a chance of winning is to tell us (in up to 500 words) why you believe winning will give you the boost you need.

The Food Business Challenge is brought to you by five Challenge Partners – each with a real understanding of the issues facing food businesses:

Roythornes Solicitors will review your legal documentation – your contracts, terms and conditions and non-disclosure agreements to make sure your business is protected and ready for growth.

WLP consultants will undertake a top line strategic review of your business – where are you going and are you approaching your target markets in the
best way?

Pelican Communications will conduct a social media and PR audit of your business – what are you and others saying about your business and how can you use social media to generate sales.

Bulley Davey accountants will have a look at your financial structure, systems and reporting methods and highlight issues where your business could be performing better and where changes could be made to make sure you are ‘financially fit for growth’.

Design experts childsdesign will audit your packaging, identity and website – analysing how it fits in with your brand, where you are and where you want
to be.

The challenge is open now and entries can be made up until 5pm on 17th July 2015.

Visit the website to find out more and submit your entry  www.foodbusinesschallenge.co.uk

Born of earth and wood: Sytch Farm Studios

Sytch Farm Studio, near Shrewsbury, is home to the workshops of husband and wife team Gill and Jon Thompson. Carpenter and artist Jon creates wooden serving boards and paddles from sustainable British trees; while artisan potter Gill throws and glazes bowls and vessels inspired by Shropshire and her birthplace – Cornwall.

Gill’s beautiful ceramic bowls fit snuggly into the handle of the boards, creating a match made in heaven for fans of cheese and pickles, charcuterie and dips or tapas.

Since setting up in business less than a year ago, the couple has already received orders from Michelin-starred restaurateur Tom Kerridge for his new venture, The Coach, in Marlow.  ITV This Morning chef Marcus Bean and the Hairy Bikers are also admirers of Sytch Farm Studios kitchenware. Chefs and foodies appreciate the fact that these stunning and unusual products can be made to order in a variety of sizes, colour glazes and timbers depending on personal preference.

Each bowl and board is created by hand, ensuring each piece is completely original. The size, shape and character depends on the timber Jon uses whether Oak, Wild Cherry, Burr Elm, Apple, Plane Tree or Walnut.

Gill sources her clay from Stoke and a claypit in St Agnes, Cornwall, to throw her bowls with. She also creates a range of stylish ceramic hearts, gifts and keepsakes; These make unique Christmas decorations as well as personal gifts for christenings, weddings and other occasions. If you are looking for that extra special something, then you can also ask Gill and Jon to carry out a bespoke commission for you too.

Here at The Artisan Food Trail, we love hand crafted items such as these. Being from a design background ourselves we appreciate the work that goes into making them and also their individuality. We're sure you'll want to take a look at Sytch Farm Studios products too. With Christmas just around the corner not only do they have the perfect gifts for foodies, they also have some wonderful Christmas decorations.

Win some beautiful tableware from Sytch Farm Studios

The Artisan Food Trail is running a competition to win some of this beautiful tableware and someone could be the proud owner of a classic British-made solid oak paddle board and ceramic bowl set worth £49 from Sytch Farm Studios.

This competition has now closed

The Artisan Food Trail is not exhibiting this year but we are planning to visit as this is one of the many trade events that gives us the chance to catch up with some of our members as well as meet other artisan food and drink producers.

It looks like we're going to have jam-packed day as there are no less than 17 of our members exhibiting! With numbers like that, there's the potential for The Artisan Food Trail to have its own area next time. That's something we'll need to talk to the event organisers about to check the feasibility of such a thing.

We've created a handy table, below, which includes the AFT members exhibiting at the show.
If you're visiting and are a business looking to source the best artisan food and drink we invite you to visit our member's stands to discuss your requirements.
